Phantom Wallet for Beginners: Setup, Funding & Safety

Step 1 — Install from the official source only

Get Phantom from phantom.app — type the address yourself. On desktop it installs as a browser extension (Chrome, Brave, Edge, Firefox); on mobile it's the Phantom app on the App Store / Play Store. Fake wallet apps and extensions exist and they exist to steal — the download source is your first security decision.

Step 2 — Create the wallet and protect the recovery phrase

Choose "Create a new wallet". Phantom shows you a 12-word recovery phrase. This phrase is the wallet:

• Write it on paper. Two copies, two safe places. Not a screenshot, not a notes app, not cloud storage, not email — anything digital can be stolen remotely.
• Never type it into any website or "support" chat. The phrase is only ever used to restore the wallet inside the official Phantom app. Anyone who asks for it — "validation", "airdrop", "support" — is a thief. No exceptions, ever.
• The password you also set only locks the app on this device; the phrase is the master key.

Step 3 — Fund it: SOL first, then whatever you need

Your wallet's address is shown at the top (tap to copy). Two ways to fund:

• From an exchange: withdraw SOL (and USDT if you need it) to your address — always selecting the Solana network. The wrong-network mistake is common enough that we wrote a whole guide on it.
• Inside Phantom: the Buy button lets you purchase SOL with a card via Phantom's payment partners (availability varies by country).

Keep at least a dollar or two of SOL at all times — it pays the network fees for everything else, and a wallet with zero SOL can't transact at all (the #1 cause of failed transactions).

Step 4 — Connect to your first dApp

Desktop: open the dApp's site, click its Connect Wallet button, pick Phantom, approve. Connecting is read-only — it shares your address, nothing more. Money only moves when you approve a specific transaction, and Phantom shows you exactly what each transaction does before you sign.

Mobile: regular browsers can't reach the Phantom app — open the dApp inside Phantom instead: tap the globe/search icon in the app and type the address (e.g. advancebitcoin.org).

Step 5 — Everyday hygiene

• Read every signature. Phantom simulates what a transaction will move before you approve. If it doesn't match what you expect, reject.
• Prune connections. Settings → Connected apps: disconnect sites you no longer use.
• Heed the warnings. Phantom flags suspicious sites and newly-registered domains. A new-domain notice on a young project is informational (verify through the project's official channels); a "known malicious" red alert means leave.
• Bookmark the dApps you trust and use bookmarks instead of links from DMs or comments — that habit alone defeats most phishing.
